Zerodha Review 2026: Who Should Choose India’s Largest Stock Broker?

Every month, lakhs of Indians open their first demat account. Most of them hear one name before any other: Zerodha.

But the broker that suits your colleague may not suit you. A day trader and a SIP investor need different things.

This review answers one question: should you choose Zerodha in 2026? Read the snapshot below. If it fits, keep reading. If not, the last sections tell you where to look instead.

Zerodha keeps costs near zero for buy-and-hold investors and stays cheap for traders. In return, it gives you no stock tips, no relationship manager, and no bank account under the same roof. If you want hand-holding, this is not your broker.

Note: All charges in this review come from Zerodha's official charges page, checked on 17 July 2026. Charges change. Verify on zerodha.com before opening an account.

What Makes Zerodha Different From Most Brokers?

Why did Zerodha become India's largest broker?

Zerodha grew without spending on ads for most of its life. It grew on price and word of mouth.

When it launched in 2010, full-service brokers charged a percentage of every trade. Zerodha flipped that to a flat ₹20. In 2015, it made equity delivery free. Traders switched in lakhs.

One more thing sets it apart: it took no outside funding. No investor pressure means no push to squeeze users for revenue.

What business philosophy does it follow?

The model is simple: charge traders a small flat fee, charge investors nothing, and keep costs low by running everything on technology instead of branches.

The charges page itself reflects this thinking. It openly states that government taxes like STT can cost you more than Zerodha's own brokerage on intraday trades. Few brokers point a spotlight at charges they do not even earn.

Which services does it intentionally avoid?

Zerodha does not offer:

  • Stock recommendations or research reports
  • Relationship managers
  • A 3-in-1 account with its own bank
  • Regular mutual funds (only direct plans)

These are choices, not gaps. Advisory creates a conflict of interest for a broker that earns from your trades. Zerodha avoids the conflict by avoiding the service.

What kind of investor is Zerodha trying to attract?

Someone who decides on their own. The free Varsity education platform exists to build that investor, not to sell them anything.

Why this matters to you: if you expect your broker to tell you what to buy, Zerodha's model will feel empty. If you make your own calls, the model works in your favour — nobody profits from pushing products at you.

What We Found After Evaluating Zerodha's Platform

The following observations stem from a primary assessment of Zerodha’s published rates, product offerings, and help center materials.

Kite Trading Platform

Kite is Zerodha's trading app and website. Orders go through in two or three taps. Charts come from TradingView and ChartIQ, which serious traders already know.

What beginners should note: Kite shows you the market raw. No "stocks to buy today" banners, no gamified nudges. That is calmer, but also quieter — you get no guidance at all.

One caution from the record: Kite has faced technical glitches on some high-volume days in past years. Heavy intraday traders should keep a backup plan, such as the call & trade line. A review of the charges page shows that the line costs ₹50 per order, so it is a backup, not a habit.

Coin for Mutual Funds

Coin sells only direct mutual fund plans, with zero commission and zero platform fee.

Why this matters: regular plans pay the distributor a commission of around 1% of your money every year. Direct plans skip it. On a ₹10,000 monthly SIP over 20 years, that difference can grow to several lakhs.

Funds bought on Coin sit in your demat account. That adds a small cost on exit — the charges page lists a DP charge of about ₹15 per scrip when you sell, with a small extra discount on mutual fund and bond transactions. For long-term SIP investors who rarely redeem, this stays minor.

IPO Application Experience

You apply through Console, Zerodha's back office, using UPI for the payment block. The process takes a few minutes: pick the IPO, set your bid, approve the mandate in your UPI app.

The useful part: allotted shares land straight in your demat account, and the blocked money releases on its own if you get no allotment.

Portfolio Tracking

Console shows profit and loss with the numbers that matter at tax time: realised gains, dividends, and ready-made tax P&L reports. Most investors discover the value of this in July, when filing returns.

A check of the support section shows Zerodha runs on a ticket system plus detailed help articles, not a general phone line. Common questions get answered by the articles fast. Unusual problems need a ticket and patience.

Where Zerodha Falls Short

Every point below names who it affects. A fair review needs this section.

AMC Charges

The charges page shows AMC is free for the first year. After that, holdings up to ₹4 lakh stay free, ₹4–10 lakh costs ₹100 per year, and above ₹10 lakh costs ₹300 per year, plus 18% GST.

Some rivals charge zero AMC for life. The money is small — under ₹30 a month at worst — but investors who count every rupee have cheaper options.

Who this affects: portfolios above ₹4 lakh that want a truly zero-cost demat.

Research Offering

Zerodha gives you education, not recommendations. Full-service brokers like ICICI Direct or Motilal Oswal send research reports and stock calls.

The charges page also lists Tickertape Pro as a paid add-on at ₹249 to ₹2,399 — so even Zerodha's own analytics tool costs extra beyond the free tier.

Who this affects: investors who want a broker to shortlist stocks for them.

Banking Integration

Zerodha is not a bank. Funds move through UPI or net banking, which takes a step more than a 3-in-1 account where the bank, demat, and trading account link as one.

Who this affects: people who value one-app convenience over cost, especially senior investors used to bank-linked broking.

Customer Support Expectations

No relationship manager. No walk-in branch for most cities. Support is self-serve first, tickets second.

The charges page adds two small stings worth knowing: orders placed while your account holds a debit balance cost ₹40 instead of ₹20, and a delayed payment charge of 18% a year applies on debit balances.

Who this affects: anyone who wants a human on the phone by default, and traders who run negative balances.

Who Should Open a Zerodha Account?

Long-Term Investors

Zero brokerage on delivery means buying and holding costs you only government charges. Your broker earns nothing from your equity investing, so nothing pushes you to churn.

First-Time Investors

Free account opening, free delivery, and Varsity's plain-language lessons make the entry cheap and the learning free. The trade-off: you learn by doing, without tips.

IPO Investors

UPI-based applications from the same account where your shares will sit. No separate forms, no bank visits.

Mutual Fund Investors

Direct plans only, at zero commission. For a SIP investor, this single feature can matter more than every brokerage number in this review.

Who Should Consider Other Brokers?

Choosing another broker is not a defeat. It is matching the tool to the job.

Investors Seeking Free AMC

Brokers like Groww advertise zero AMC. If your holdings cross ₹4 lakh and you want zero demat cost for life, compare there first.

Investors Wanting Research Recommendations

Full-service brokers — ICICI Direct, HDFC Securities, Motilal Oswal — bundle research and advisory. You pay more per trade for that guidance.

Investors Looking for 3-in-1 Banking Integration

ICICI Direct, HDFC Securities, and Kotak Securities link your bank, demat, and trading accounts. Money moves without manual transfers.

Is Zerodha Worth It in 2026?

Who should open: long-term investors, SIP investors, IPO applicants, and self-directed traders who want low, transparent costs.

Who shouldn't: investors who want stock recommendations, a relationship manager, or a 3-in-1 bank-linked account.

Biggest advantage: the cost structure. Free delivery, free direct funds, and a charges page that hides nothing — it even warns you that government taxes can exceed its own fee.

Biggest limitation: you are on your own. No advice, no phone-first support, and past platform glitches mean heavy intraday traders need a backup route.

For the investor who makes their own decisions, Zerodha remains one of the strongest choices in India in 2026. For everyone else, the alternatives above exist for a reason.

FAQ ON Zerodha

Is Zerodha safe for investing?

Yes, within the limits that apply to any broker. Zerodha is registered with SEBI and is a member of NSE, BSE, and MCX. Your shares sit in your own demat account with the depository, not with Zerodha. Per the NSE broker factsheet, it is India's largest broker by net worth. No broker can protect you from market losses, though.

Is Zerodha good for beginners?

Good for beginners who want to learn. Account opening is free, delivery is free, and Varsity teaches the basics in plain language. It is a poor fit for beginners who want someone to tell them what to buy.

Can I apply for IPOs through Zerodha?

Yes. Log in to Console, choose the IPO, place your bid, and approve the payment block in your UPI app. Blocked money releases on its own if you receive no allotment.

Does Zerodha charge annual maintenance fees?

The first year is free. After that, as per the official charges page: holdings up to ₹4 lakh pay nothing, ₹4–10 lakh pay ₹100 a year, and above ₹10 lakh pay ₹300 a year, plus 18% GST, billed quarterly.

Is Zerodha better than Groww?

Depends on who you are. Groww offers the easier first experience and markets zero AMC. Zerodha offers deeper trading tools, free delivery, and stronger education. New investors lean Groww; investors building a serious long-term portfolio lean Zerodha.

Is Zerodha better than Upstox?

Both run flat-fee models in the same price band. Zerodha's edge is its education and its long, profitable track record. Upstox competes on promotions and app features. Active traders should compare the current pricing pages side by side before deciding.
