Key Insights from IPO Valuation and Listing Performance

  • Listing gains are concentrated in lower valuation IPOs: IPOs priced below 15x P/E delivered the strongest listing performance (11.69%) with a high premium ratio (62.5%), suggesting that the market is rewarding relatively conservatively priced offerings.
  • Higher valuation IPOs face weak listing acceptance: IPOs priced above 50x P/E recorded negative average listing returns (-5.95%) with no premium listings, indicating resistance from investors toward aggressively priced issues.
  • Mid-range valuations reflect selective participation: IPOs in the 15–30x P/E range showed modest listing gains (2.59%) and lower premium ratios (35.29%), pointing to more selective investor behaviour at moderate valuations.
  • Valuation distribution is skewed by extreme pricing: The large gap between average P/E (44.3) and median P/E (15.075), along with an outlier of 953.8, indicates that a small number of highly valued IPOs are influencing overall valuation metrics.

Methodology of the IPO Valuation vs Listing Study

The IPO valuation dataset is prepared using the following methodology:

  • P/E Ratio:
The P/E ratio is calculated as Price (upper band or fixed issue price) divided by Earnings Per Share (EPS). The upper band or fixed issue price is sourced from the Red Herring Prospectus (RHP) or from official exchange disclosures on the National Stock Exchange of India and BSE Limited. The Earnings Per Share (EPS) is taken from the company’s RHP.
  • Listing Price:
The listing price is taken from the respective stock exchange where the IPO is listed.
  • Listing Gain:
Listing gain is calculated using the following formula:
    Listing Gain (%) = ((Listing Price − Issue Price) / Issue Price) × 100
